"Freeing Up" Schools To Fix Themselves

In yet another example of state officials looking for ways out of getting into the turnaround business, some Massachusetts officials are thinking about giving four of its most troubled schools "pilot" status (somewhat akin to charter school status) rather than stepping in and doing something on its own, according to this Boston Globe story (4 failing schools may become pilots to fix themselves). Of course, pilot (and charter) status wasn't really established for this purpose.
