Touting Mayoral Control
The most interesting thing about this LA Times editorial (N.Y. and Chicago Mayors on L.A. Schools) is that, in Chicago at least, there are increasing questions about whether Mayor Daley and his current crop of appointees can take Chicago schools to the next level.
Few argue that things aren't generally better than they were in 1995 when Daley gained control over the school system, but making the trains run on time is different from getting more of the kids to learn, and not even dramatic test score increases this spring haven't softened concerns about improvements in quality or turned around the exodus of white and middle class kids from the city schools.
