The Only "Education" Issue In This Election

Sad to say, the closest that education issues come to being a major part of this year's midterm elections over all will be the famously flubbed joke John Kerry told admonishing students to work hard in school or else end up in Iraq -- a joke that may end up costing the Dems.

However, Kerry wasn't entirely wrong, according to a NYT article: "Though the military has a smaller proportion of college graduates than the country at large, it turns out that it has a higher proportion of people with high school diplomas, according to a comparison of figures from the Pentagon and the Census Bureau," according to the (No Joke, the Troops Did Their Homework). However, "High school dropouts made up 19 percent of new enlistees this year, up from 6 percent in 2003."

UPDATE: CJR Daily takes the press to task for its saturation coverage of the gaffe (John Kerry: The Man Behind the Curtain).

Well, jeez, when the passing ASVAB score is chopped, the number of drop-outs making the grade will increase--

just like how some states are redefining "passing" test scores to make getting AYP easier.

Standards are always the first thing to go... ironic, no?
